How Do I Return My Lease?

Treasure Coast Toyota can assist you in returning your leased car, minivan, SUV or truck. We have put together a list of our most frequently asked questions regarding the return of a lease. Please select your question(s) for more information.

How do I return my lease?

If you want to return your lease and upgrade into a new Toyota, great, we can help you with that right away, even if you didn't lease your Toyota from us. Toyota Loyalty programs still apply! All we need is a little information about your current lease: the year, the condition and the current odometer reading.

If you are simply returning your lease and you do not want to upgrade into a new Toyota, you need to contact Southeast Toyota whom you have your lease contract with. A Southeast Toyota representative will set up a time for you to have your vehicle inspected and they will guide you through the process and how and where to turn in your lease to your local Toyota dealer

What if I am over miles?

Don't panic! A lot of people who lease cars find themselves exceeding their mileage limit.

First, let’s understand why leases have mileage limitations: Cars depreciate in value as they are driven and get older. The more miles that are driven, the more a vehicle loses its value. Lease payments are based on expected depreciated residual value at lease-end. A car that is expected to be driven 36,000 miles during a 36 month lease will have a higher lease-end residual value and a lower lease payment than the same car that is expected to be driven 45,000 miles. Excess miles charges are not penalties, these charges are simply fair compensation to the lease company for the unexpected higher depreciation and lower lease-end residual value than agreed to in the original lease contract.

What can you do? Manufacturers release incentives and loyalty programs that may benefit you when it comes time to get into a new car when you have excess miles on your current leased car. This also applies to leased vehicles of other makes, as there are incentives and rebates that may apply to the car you are upgrading into that will allow the dealership to make a deal for you that makes financial sense, even if you are over miles. Take it from a former-saleswoman who took in a VW lease (at a Toyota store) with 14K excess miles and leased them a RAV4 at the payment they were looking for. So, it is possible! Again, Don't panic!

Can I trade a lease?

Well, technically... YES! You won't have what we car-people call "equity" but yes, you can trade in your lease and either purchase or lease another car. As a dealer we have two options, we can either take your lease in and "ground it" as a leased vehicle for Toyota Motor Corporation or SET or we can take it in as a trade, depending on the payoff and what would make better sense for the overall deal we are looking to achieve for our patron.

Can I trade a different brand lease for a Toyota?

Absolutely. We can either take in a leased vehicle of another brand temporarily until it can be returned to the appropriate destination (from our dealership) or we can take it in as a trade, if that would make better financial sense. Sometimes it is better for the patron that we take in a leased vehicle as a trade, especially if it is over miles. If you are over miles, don't panic. We have seen just about every scenario there is.

Can I trade out of my lease early?

Well, that depends on how early. If you signed up for a three year lease and you have only been driving it for nine months, then I think you should give us a call so we can discuss this further, especially if you think you are going to go over your miles during your term.

The simple answer is yes. Toyota has loyalty programs which facilitate early-lease-turn-in so long as it is in conjunction with the purchase or lease of a new Toyota. Incentives change from time to time but they have included picking up 6 remaining payments and even putting $500 dealer cash toward your next purchase or lease.

What do I do with my family member's leased Toyota vehicle?

If you have found yourself trying to figure out what to do with a deceased family member's leased Toyota, then you are in an all too common predicament. The first thing you need to do is call Southeast Toyota if you leased your vehicle in the southern-most 5 state region, including Florida. If the vehicle was leased up north, you need to contact Toyota Motor Company. Depending on the lease contract, the worst-case-scenario would be a voluntary repossession of the vehicle by Toyota.
