People have always loved the great outdoors, but with the recent influx of new nature lovers, campground overcrowding has pushed more and more aficionados to explore further into the backcountry. The Tacoma has always been a bellwether for adventure machines, but now for the first time, there’s a brand-new Tacoma that’s purpose-built for overlanding, and it’s sure to appeal to everyone from professional outdoorspeople to weekend warriors looking for the best trucks for sale near Port St. Lucie.

Now that we’ve had some time with it, here’s what we love about the Toyota Tacoma Trailhunter.

A Brand-New Powertrain

At the heart of the Trailhunter, we have a fully reworked engine, which is shared with other legendary Taco models like the 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro.

The i-FORCE MAX engine is a turbocharged hybrid four-cylinder, replacing the 3.5-liter V6 engine of yesteryear. It cranks out a prodigious 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque, making it the most powerful motor ever offered in a Tacoma by a wide margin.

To make sure you’re able to haul everything you need, the Trailhunter is designed for up to 6,000 pounds of towing capacity.

Behind the engine, we have the proprietary 4WDemand part-time four-wheel drive with an electronically controlled transfer case and active traction control. This system ensures maximum rock-crawling effort while also squeezing every bit of efficiency out of the hybrid motor.

The new Tacoma engine is also paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for the Tacoma Trailhunter is rated at a respectable 22 MPG in the city and 24 on the highway, and Toyota claims that it’ll be able to climb an 8% interstate grade without needing to downshift.

Off-Road Dynamics

Toyota has all but done away with the leaf-spring rear suspension of the last generation in favor of a coil spring multi-link setup, ensuring a much smoother ride on and off the trail.

The Trailhunter also benefits from its unique suspension upgrades to ferry you and your gear into the wilderness. It features Old Man Emu 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks and rear remote reservoir shocks, which grant it a full extra inch of clearance in the front and a half inch in the back.

Apart from the suspension, the standard 33-inch Goodyear® Territory® R/T tires provide uncompromising grip, and they bring the total increase in ground clearance up to 2 full inches over the base model. The tires pair with a gorgeous set of trim-specific 18-inch bronze-finished wheels.

One of the coolest standard features of the Trailhunter is the new front stabilizer bar disconnect system, which can be engaged at the push of a button for a massive increase in articulation when you find yourself on those extra hairy trails. This function will also be compatible with Toyota-approved lift kits in case you decide you need even more space between you and the ground.

Multi-Terrain Select is standard in the Trailhunter as well. This feature now functions in both 4-high and 4-low and includes settings for six different terrain modes to adjust traction control on the fly. It also features Downhill Assist Control and Crawl Control, which highlights the Trailhunter’s strengths by acting as a low-speed cruise control to allow you to focus on steering through those backcountry dips and divots while the truck does the throttling for you.

Rugged Equipment

The cornucopia of factory overlanding add-ons is an integral part of the Trailhunter package.

You’ll immediately notice the ARB utility bar in the bed, which comes with modular MOLLE panels for gear storage. Not only is it functional, but it looks pretty dang cool, too. The Tacoma is also compatible with heavier-duty ARB equipment to support additional gear like rooftop tents.

The Trailhunter features an ARB steel rear bumper as well, complete with high-strength recovery hooks, painted red to stand out.

And if you’re worried about dinging the underside of your shiny new rig, don’t be. The Trailhunter comes standard with robust underbody protection, including a steel front skid plate, fuel tank protector, transfer case protector, rear diff protector, and frame-mounted rock rails.

Other killer accessories include a high-clearance exhaust tip, a high-mount air intake along the passenger A-pillar, and Rigid Industries color-switching LED fog lights.

Improved Bed Utility

The 2024 Tacoma’s dimensions have been tweaked to guarantee you’ll be able to make the most out of the cargo box—an essential component in any overlanding rig.

While the length for both cargo box styles remains virtually unchanged from last year, it gains a full 2 inches of depth, and over 3 inches between wheel housings. With these subtle yet important enhancements, Toyota says that overall bed volume has increased by 7%.

The Tacoma Trailhunter’s payload is rated at 1,425 pounds for the 6-foot bed, and 1,475 pounds for the 5-footer, allowing plenty of wiggle room for additional supplies.

Aside from its expanded dimensions, the Trailhunter’s bed includes a few more thoughtful touches. It comes with four fixed cargo tie-downs and a deck rail system with four additional adjustable tie-down cleats, allowing you to customize and secure your loadout to your precise needs.

The bed is also well-lit with conical LED lamps, and all i-FORCE MAX grades come standard with a 2,400-watt AC inverter, which sends power to both the bed and cabin to keep your electronics running whenever you need it. To top it off, the Trailhunter has an available bed-mounted air compressor built right in, plus prewired auxiliary switches to hook up your gear headache-free.

All the Best Tech

Much like other upper-level Tacoma trims, the Trailhunter benefits from the latest and greatest infotainment setup. A 14.0-inch screen dominates the center stack, providing a responsive and crystal-clear interface with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It pairs with a 12.3-inch customizable digital driver information center and heads-up display.

Auxiliary tech features abound as well. The Trailhunter comes standard with wireless device charging, two USB-C charging ports, and a JBL premium audio system, which has one of our all-time favorite features: a JLB FLEX rechargeable portable speaker that plugs into the passenger-side dash.

Included connected services include Service Connect, Safety Connect, Drive Connect, Remote Connect, and 4G Wi-Fi capability.

The Tacoma also has multiple available external cameras to assist in trail running and towing.

Superior Safety

Toyota’s never been one to skimp on safety, and they’ve spared no expense to make sure the Tacoma is among the safest trucks on or off the road.
